What this means — the three outcomes
The NYSC Act (Cap N84, section 2) sorts every graduate into one of three groups:
- Certificate of Exemption — you are excused from service because a ground in the Act applies to you at your graduation date: you were over 30 years old at graduation; you had served more than 9 months in the Armed Forces or Nigeria Police; you are staff of the DSS/NSO, NIA or DIA; or you were conferred a National Honour.
- Letter of Exclusion — you are not exempt; you are excluded because of how you studied. Part-time, distance-learning, sandwich, online and NOUN graduates get a Letter of Exclusion, printed from the NYSC dashboard.
- You must serve — none of the above applies, so you are called up for the one-year service like any other eligible graduate.
Worked examples
Example 1: born 4 December 1994, graduated 7 May 2025, full-time, no other ground. At graduation they were 30 years 5 months old — over 30 at graduation — so they receive a Certificate of Exemption on the age ground.
Example 2: born 15 March 2002, graduated 20 November 2025, part-time. Study mode decides it: part-time graduates are excluded, so they receive a Letter of Exclusion.
Next steps, whichever outcome you got
- Register on the NYSC portal when mobilisation opens — this applies to everyone, including exempt and excluded graduates.
- Exempt? Your Certificate of Exemption is collected from your institution.
- Excluded? Print your Letter of Exclusion from your NYSC dashboard after registration.
- Foreign-trained? Submit your certificates to the NYSC Mobilisation Department for evaluation.

Who is exempt from NYSC service?
Under section 2 of the NYSC Act (Cap N84), a graduate is exempt if, at the date of graduation, any one of these applies: they are over 30 years old; they have served more than 9 months in the Armed Forces or the Nigeria Police Force; they are staff of the DSS/NSO, NIA or DIA; or they have been conferred a National Honour.
I studied part-time. Am I exempt?
No — part-time, distance-learning, sandwich, online and NOUN graduates are not exempt; they are excluded from service and receive a Letter of Exclusion instead. You still register on the NYSC portal, and the letter is printed from your NYSC dashboard.
Do I still need to register if I am exempt?
Yes. Everyone must register on the NYSC portal when mobilisation opens. Certificates of Exemption are collected from your institution; exclusion letters are printed from the NYSC dashboard.
I trained abroad. What do I do?
Foreign-trained graduates submit their certificates to the NYSC Mobilisation Department for evaluation before mobilisation.
Is disability a ground for exemption?
The grounds listed in section 2 of the NYSC Act are age over 30 at graduation, 9+ months of Armed Forces or Police service, staff of the named security agencies, and a National Honour. This checker follows the Act's list.
