What this means — the two routes
Family residence (Article 22) lets your family live with you in Kuwait. The main rule is simple: the salary written on your work permit must be at least KD 800 a month. Nine job categories are exempt from that minimum — from engineers and government teachers to health-ministry medical staff and imams — provided the job matches your qualifications. And one outdated rule to ignore: a university degree is NOT required. That condition was abolished in July 2024, whatever older guides still say.
Family visit visas are the fallback: no minimum salary, KD 10 a month, covering relatives to the 4th degree by blood and the 3rd degree by marriage. On either route, dependents may not work.
Worked examples
Example 1: salary KD 850 on the permit, job "accountant" (not exempt), bringing a wife and one child. KD 850 is above the KD 800 minimum → eligible. Costs for 2 people: entry KD 20 total, residence KD 40 a year (KD 20 each for spouse and child), insurance KD 200 a year (KD 100 each).
Example 2: salary KD 650, job "salesman" (not exempt), wife and daughter. KD 650 is below the minimum → not eligible for family residence on salary grounds. The family visit visa remains open, and a discretionary waiver may be possible for a child under 5 born abroad.
Next steps
- Get a fresh salary certificate showing the salary on your work permit.
- Prepare attested documents — marriage certificate and children's birth certificates, attested as required.
- Apply through Residency Affairs (General Directorate of Residency Affairs) for the entry visas, then convert to residence and arrange the mandatory health insurance.
- Keep your salary at or above KD 800 — it is re-checked, and a drop can affect renewals.

What salary do I need for a family residence visa (Article 22) in Kuwait?
Your salary as written on your work permit must be at least KD 800 a month — unless your job is in one of the 9 exempt categories (such as engineers, teachers in government schools, and Ministry of Health medical staff), in which case there is no salary minimum, as long as your job matches your qualifications.
Do I need a university degree to sponsor my family?
No. That condition was abolished in July 2024 — many online guides are outdated. What matters is the KD 800 permit salary (or an exempt job) and that your job matches your qualifications.
How much does family residence cost per person?
Entry visa KD 10 per person. Residence is KD 20 per person per year for a spouse and children, and KD 300 per person per year for parents and other dependents. Mandatory health insurance is KD 100 per person per year.
What if my salary is below KD 800?
You cannot sponsor family residence on salary grounds, but a family visit visa has no minimum salary — it costs KD 10 a month and covers relatives up to the 4th degree by blood and 3rd degree by marriage. A discretionary waiver from the Director General of Residency Affairs is also possible in some cases (for example children under 5 born abroad to resident parents) — possible, never guaranteed.
Can my family work on a family visa?
No. Dependents on a family visa may not work in Kuwait.
